- Essential Oils for Common Pediatric Conditions:

The first jing cycle is one of the most powerful times to influence one’s ultimate physical, mental and emotional health. As a result, identifying and treating problems during this time can be crucial to a child’s life. As the concentrated jing of plants, essential oils are one of the most powerful modalities to use for a variety of conditions during this stage of development. In this class, Dr. Yuen will discuss the use of essential oils to influence a child’s physical, mental and emotional health. In the first half of the class, Dr. Yuen will review diagnostic techniques for children within the first jing cycle and general guidelines for essential oil use. In the second half, he will review common pediatric conditions and provide suggestions for the types of oils he finds useful.

- Digestion as the Basis for Wellness:

One of the most important determining factors in our health, wellness and longevity is the digestive system. Together with the breath, it represents our relationship with the external world. The taiyin channel represents our ego, both from the perspective of the yi and the po. It is what differentiates self from other, and a strong taiyin mechanism allows for orderly and clear differentiation. While a key to wellness and longevity, it can also become a barrier to spiritual cultivation. For this reason, many Taoist adepts practiced bi gu (food abstinence) and greatly slowed down or stopped breathing during certain stages of their spiritual practices.

In this course we will explore the digestive system and the complexities of taiyin in the cultivation of wellness and longevity. We will also explore the various impacts of fasting, diet and other lifestyle factors. On day 1, Dr. Jeffrey Yuen will introduce us to the concepts of ingestion, transformation, absorption, differentiation and excretion, both within the context of digestion and respiration. We will explore both diagnostic and treatment methods assessing the function of the various digestive and respiratory organs and issues of fluid physiology.

On day 2 we will continue our exploration of diagnostic methods discussing and demonstrating pulse diagnostic techniques such as: how to identify whether the small intestine is separating the pure from the impure, how to assess the transformational aspect of the spleen, how to assess whether the spleen is supporting the lungs, whether there is adequate stomach fire, whether wei qi is descending properly to support peristalsis, and many more. Jeffrey will also review relevant aspects of other useful diagnostic techniques in digestive evaluation such as tongue diagnosis and palpation.

During the treatment section, Jeffrey will discuss qigong methods for optimizing the digestive system, including exercises that help to optimize digestion, correct digestive pathologies and exercises to help bank excess energy into the kidneys. He will also discuss dietary recommendations, herbal medicine and acupuncture.

Monday will be a practicum where Jeffrey will treat one or two patients and we will all practice pulse taking and qigong techniques under his guidance.
