- Chinese Medicine in the Treatment of Cardiovascular Disease:

According to the Classics, the heart is the emperor. The role of the emperor is not only to govern the functional aspects of a society, but to provide direction to the entire kingdom. Classical medicine views the cardiovascular system both as that which nourishes the body and that which provides a context for our lives. Cardiovascular pathology therefore often has a very strong connection to the spirit. In this class Jeffrey will survey the Classical concepts of the heart and cardiovascular system as the determinant of our destiny and as the physical and energetic system that delivers the nourishment to carry out that destiny.

On Friday, Jeffrey will discuss cardiovascular pathology emphasizing the Classics, Wang Qing-Ren and Taoist perspectives: bringing together the physical, emotional and spiritual aspects of cardiovascular disease. On Monday we will learn and practice pulse diagnosis, tongue diagnosis and face reading focused on identifying the various permutations of cardiovascular disease and challenges to the shen. Among the topics that will be covered include cardiomyopathies, arrhythimias, myocardial infarcts, strokes, atherosclerosis, varicose veins, coronary artery disease and thromboses.

- When Acupuncture Can Be Harmful:

While most clinicians are aware of the standard contraindications in acupuncture textbooks, most are unaware of the more subtle ways in which acupuncture can cause adverse outcomes. These adverse events can occur days, weeks, months or even years later. This phenomenon was recognized by early physicians and martial artists, the latter weaponizing this information into very sophisticated techniques that became the prized secrets of some of the most famous traditions. Because of the martial uses and potential for harm, this knowledge was not openly disseminated and only hints are found in the classics.

In this class, Jeffrey will introduce the concepts and theory of determining the location of the vital energies and how clinicians can avoid interference that could result in iatrogenic illness. He will further discuss the historical use in some of the martial traditions and teach traditional techniques to reverse such damage that can also be used to treat many types of internal injuries. .
