- The Role of Herbal Medicine in Cultivating the Shen:

The cultivation of the spirit is a cultivation of understanding, and in some cases changing, how we relate to the world. It is often difficult for people to see reality for what it is because our minds are too rigid and indoctrinated in how we perceive things. Being able to see in a different way can be very important to help people with chronic disease understand that they are not their disease, and that in reality, we are not what we typically perceive ourselves to be. One of the most popular ways of transcending our normal perceptions of things through the ages has been through the use of various plants. In this class, Jeffrey Yuen will take us on a tour of the use of plants in the process of spiritual awakening and for cultivating alternate ways of perceiving things as they’ve been used throughout Chinese history. This discussion will incorporate many of the herbs discussed in Shen Nong’s Ben Cao and other texts but will also include details on preparation and how the substances were consumed (ingestion, inhalation, etc.) and will include practical discussions of dosing, antidoting and which spiritual practices may be useful to utilize along with the plants both in self cultivation and in helping patients see things differently.

- Jeffrey 101: The Big Picture:

In this first-ever introductory class to Jeffrey’s teachings, Jeffrey will survey the evolution of Chinese medicine from a Daoist perspective.

Day 1 Jeffrey will begin with the ancient shamanic traditions and how these traditions began to be transformed and refined through the ages: evolving into the various schools and theories of Chinese medicine, both written and oral. Jeffrey will also discuss the main ideas these schools presented and how they were influenced by the time periods within which they developed.

Day 2 Jeffrey will summarize the essential points of Chinese medicine including summary discussions of physiological and pathological models including the various layers of channel systems, fluid physiology, zangfu and disease transmission theories as presented throughout the Classics including models starting with the Nei Jing and Nan Jing through the Wen Bing and TCM schools. He will also survey diagnostic procedures and their evolution including pulse diagnosis, palpation, tongue diagnosis and morphology. Finally he will survey treatment modalities and techniques including, acupuncture, herbal medicine, diet, essential oils, gems and stones and qigong.
