” Essential Oils and Classical Chinese Medicine"

For the first time, Jeffrey Yuen will be teaching the actions and uses of the recently available TCM essential oils. With this new access to essential oils made from Chinese medicinal plants, the scope of their therapeutic interventions is blossoming. Jeffrey's unique depth of experience with Chinese herbs along with his enthusiasm for the use of essential oils in classical Chinese medicine clinical practice will allow practitioners to gain invaluable guidance in this burgeoning field.

"Oils are inherent in plants the same way that blood is inherent in the human body. In their essential oil form, new and highly potent elements, inaccessible in other plant preparations are created. Essential oils are often miraculous in their powers to stimulate healing and potentiate change in a very short span of time.

The Chinese word for essential oil is Jing You. This Jing is the same character as the concept Jing/Essence in Classical Chinese medicine. Essential oils are the Jing or concentrated essence of the plants from which they come. They therefore have the potential to resonate directly and powerfully with the body’s Jing therapeutically.

In Chinese medicine, the brain is thought of as the sea of marrow, a sea of Jing. When the aroma of an essential oil enters the nostrils it communicates directly with the brain. In ways that science has yet to fully explain, aromas have the capacity to stimulate brain activity of many kinds and to activate emotion and memory.

Volatile oils are also the way plants protect themselves and the way they communicate. In Chinese medical terms the aroma of these volatile oils is therefore analogous to Wei/Defensive Qi. Essential oils then also therapeutically resonate with Wei Qi. When an aroma is inhaled, it directly enters the Lung system which disseminates Wei Qi, going directly to the system most involved in many disorders of Wei Qi."
