Postpartum in Classical Chinese Medicine

February 18-20, 2012

Classical Chinese medical theory feels that the period immediately following birth is one of the most important times in a woman's life. From a physical perspective, the trauma and depletion of Childbirth often leaves a new mother in a vulnerable state, where pathogenic influences can easily cross normally strong barriers. This can potentially set the stage for chronic degenerative diseases if not treated appropriately. Pathogenic influences can also affect the nutrition the child receives from the mother as well. Therefore, strategies to address these influences are very important for the health and longevity of both mother and child.

The trauma to wei and ying qi can also leave women vulnerable to psychological disturbances. These can have strong implications for the psychological and emotional health of the child as well and must be treated aggressively. Treating postpartum requires a sophisticated approach because Classically speaking, one must consider the effects on the child. Therefore, the diagnosis and treatment should account for the strengths and weaknesses of both the mother and child, treating them as essentially one entity. Spiritually, the post partum period is a time where one has the opportunity to understand and expand the experience of one's sense of self / i.e., the ego. The intensity of this experience is unique to women and if utilized for cultivation purposes, can become a very powerful path to realization.

In this seminar, Jeffrey Yuen will discuss the Classical approach to the treatment of post-partum disharmonies including the appropriate use of acupuncture, moxibustion, herbal medicine, diet therapy and cultivation techniques that can help our patients utilize the post partum period to establish strong physical foundations and to facilitate psychological and spiritual growth.

Registration:8:30 am
Seminar: 9am - 5pm
