The Materia Medica of the Tang Dynasty (Xin Shou Ben Cao) (Saturday - Sunday)

On June 12 & 13, 2010, Dr. Yuen will discuss herbs & formulas of the Tang Dynasty to help us engage in the process of self-cultivation. Much like the Han Dynasty, the Tang Dynasty was a period of great achievements in Chinese culture. In medicine this meant taking a new look at Shan Han Lun thinking. Buddhist influences as well as ideas coming through the Arabian/Silk Trade penetrated the medical world. The idea of Rebellious Qi gained supremacy over cold-induced diseases, and new aromatic herbs (such as cardamom, saffron, and fennel) came in through the foreign trade. Dr. Yuen will discuss these ideas and compare them with those of other generations, as well as look at the work of Sun Si Miao and Wang Tao.

Little-Known Energetics of the Pericardium and San Jiao Channels (Friday & Monday)

On June 11 & 14, Dr. Yuen will guide us through the Pericardium and San Jiao primary channels. Depicted in classical texts as one long continuous circuit, the primary channels tell the story of the prerequisites and requisites of our postnatal lives in each of three energetic layers: moving us through what is necessary for survival, allowing us to move out into the world and interact, and then to differentiate what we like and dislike in our interactions, becoming selective as we move out in the world. The Pericardium and San Jiao will be discussed as the bridge between interaction and differentiation/selection. The trajectories and points will be discussed, as well as treatment strategies including needling, essential oils, and stones..
